In October 2018, the iSCAPE Guildford team led by Professor Prashant Kumar from the Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) at the University of Surrey (UK) started with the calibration and evaluation of Smart Citizen kits which is run alongside the other campaign to monitor particulate matter in real-time.
The field experiments are being conducted in Guildford. Ten Smart Citizen kits are co-located with high end sensors, enabling comparison of sensor output with regulatory-grade instruments under realistic environmental conditions. The new class of low-cost sensors can open up possibilities for easy personal exposure monitoring. It also creates new challenges related to calibrating and characterizing these sensors to provide the level of precision and accuracy needed to get relevant information without significantly increasing the device cost.
